BIORAS_SHRIMP

PROJECT TEAM

For the BIORAS_SHRIMP project, the consortium comprise of 10 partners, coming from Europe and 1 from India

The Department of Biological and Environmental Science and Technology (DiSTeBA), Universita del Salento, Coordinator of this project, is a multidisciplinary department with research groups operating in 5 main areas: Biological Science, Chemical Science, Medical Science, Physic Science and Earth Science. The department is responsible of the management of the Marine Aquaculture and fisheries Research Centre of Acquatina (Lecce), which represents the experimental pole for research, technology transfer, innovation and training in the specific sectors of aquaculture and fisheries.

AquaBioTech Group is a company specialised in aquaculture, fisheries, biotechnology, environmental testing/research, engineering, consulting, development, and training. AquaBioTech Group has its own dedicated research facilities and it undertakes a variety of aquaculture, fisheries and aquatic environmental projects through its regional offices and selected partners throughout the world. The majority of AquaBioTech Group’s work is related to the marine or aquatic environment, encompassing aquaculture developments, market research, project feasibility assessments, technology sourcing, technical support and training. AquaBioTech Group also performs contracted aquaculture research for feed development, pharmaceutical testing and breeding programmes. In BIORAS_SHRIMP, AquaBioTech Group will design the RAS, and will develop an aquaponic system to recover the effluents produced.

Unipi , comprised of two pharmacologists and a biochemist, has the following expertise: preclinical pharmacological assays on in vitro and in vivo models; screening of natural extracts, fractions and purified compounds for bio-guided assay; cell pathways investigation through biochemical and molecular biology techniques; investigation on anticancer and anti-inflammatory activity of nutraceuticals and drugs. Unipi will characterize the microalgae extracts, in the form of complex mixture and/or pure compounds produced, and check for their potential bioactivity with relevance to human health. To this aim, by using established in vitro models, specific pharmacological activities of microalgae mixture/compounds will be assessed to explore their potential applications for some healthy aging promoting effects (such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer).

Biotecna is a young company who is building the first clear water recirculating system for shrimp culture in Italy. The farm has a hatchery unit for maintenance and reproduction of penaeid shrimp species, as the L. vannamei and the M. japonicus. The hatchery is also provided of a phyto and zooplankton production unit and of a specialised laboratory with well skilled people. The on-growing area is constituted by 5 race-way type fiberglass tanks, with a total volume of about 1500 m3. The farm will start its first production cycle in Spring 2022 and has a potential capacity for producing about 25-30 tons of shrimp/year, in 3 separate production cycles. The company aims to apply a sustainable process by producing high quality and safe seafood while respecting the environment, valorising “waste” and by-product and ensuring circularity.

The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture (DFA) is a government entity under the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Animal Rights. The Aquaculture Directorate (AD), within the DFA, functions as a research facility with a view to developing economically and ecologically sustainable aquaculture practices/systems. The AD has experience in the use of sustainable technologies (e.g. RAS and IMTA). The AD involved in ‘SIMTAP’ concerning self-sufficient integrated multi-trophic aquaponic systems for better food production sustainability. The AD is involved in ‘BYTHOS’ on the application of biotechnology for blue growth and circular economy. The AD brings experience in species diversification; investigation of alternative fish feed sources; laboratory testing services (water quality monitoring and research related analysis).

Kerala university of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) is the first State University in India exclusively constituted for the development of fisheries and ocean science education, research and extension elevating the erstwhile College of Fisheries established in 1979. The Department of Aquaculture, the patterning entity in the current project, is one of the leading departments under the Faculty of Fisheries. KUFOS has extensive farm lands, fish and shrimp hatcheries, advanced laboratories and the required staff to take up any project related to aquaculture and allied areas. We are the pioneers in the farming and seed production of Penaeus vannamei in Kerala which has a long history of shrimp farming, especially the black tiger shrimp culture. Our world class laboratories and student strength make our university unique in aquaculture project implementation and transfer of technology.
